Set on a five-hectare Cherry Orchard on the Clutha river in Queensberry, this ‘cottage’ incorporates the needs of a working orchard as well as an office to welcome and meet with clients. The design attaches the large office in the cottage to the implement shed via a covered carport. Polished concrete flooring and ply walls are durable materials for the needs of day to day work yet maintain a high spec finish. The exposed trusses and bi-fold windows give the rooms depth and create an indoor-outdoor feel.
What began as a rundown Waiheke bach with a majestic view, was transformed into a stunning holiday home. Every element of the building was designed to make the most of its tranquil outlook, with a high-spec kitchen and bathroom framed by windows and doors that led to an outdoor area made for soaking in the scenery day and night. Since the completion of the main house, we have also returned to build the happy client a matching self-contained cottage.
Timsfield Family Home
This simple design allows separate living areas for a young family and maximises storage space with the attic trusses in the roof. Because of the simple design and relatively low labour costs, the owners were able to spend more on materials giving this house a beautiful hi-spec finish - ply ceilings, a designer plywood kitchen and hardwood verandah beams to name a few.
This project was the definition of a fixer-upper, with the bones of a quirky 70’s Titirangi bush bach that had be worn away by the elements. We worked with the client to rebuild every inch, while saving the best original aspects and bring new life, love and warmth to this unique abode. The result was a Titirangi home that will stand the test of time and a very happy family who will enjoy it for years to come.
This is a house of great design, with functionality at the fore. The two wings on each side of the house allow privacy and give the owners space and distance to the main living area. The insitu concrete fireplace gives a lovely warmth and creates a nice area to relax in. Set on a twenty-acre section in Queensberry, it has amazing views of the Clutha river and the surrounding mountains.
Coleen Hair Studio
One of our favourite commercial building projects to date was the transformation of a late 1800’s store on Karangahape Road into a modern hair salon with a nod to the old. When we started, this store was a closed up sex shop - the evidence of such relieved itself in strange ways over the course of our work. Our clients wanted to keep the original ceiling, walls and kauri floor, so with a steady hand and attention to detail, we brought this beauty back to life with added a fitting shop front, entrance way, counter and basin area.
We worked with this lovely Waiheke couple to convert their classic fixer upper into a warm, welcoming and unique home. A complete rebuild saw the addition of lots of outdoor spaces to take in the stunning surroundings and the injection of their bright, bold personality. It was a challenging site, but a rewarding project. The client enjoyed working with us so much, he even asked to do an apprenticeship.
Aubrey Road Renovation
This original 1950’s ‘kiwi bach’ was transformed into a modern stylish home. The kitchen/living area was extended to make room for a new designer kitchen with big sliding doors on the north and west sides of the house. The old concrete block veneer cladding was replaced with new weatherboards and solid plaster. A large deck doubles the living space in summer and creates a nice indoor, outdoor feel.
Korora Road Renovation
We took this Waiheke dream home and took it up a notch, with an overhaul of their bathrooms, a sizable deck wrapping around the building, a revamp of their existing pool, significant earthworks, the addition of a tennis court, helicopter pad and gym overlooking the majestic Owhanake Bay. A wonderful project that prepared us for the Hawea wind to come.
Mt Eden Renovation
We worked alongside the talented Christopher Wood Architects, to rebuild the back of this spacious 1920’s villa on one on Mt Eden’s most desired streets. Working from the contemporary Californian style, we opened the home up to a pergola, Sto Plaster solid concrete fireplace and a set of grand floating concrete stairs leading up to the new pool.
This was an exciting project for Hawkeye Builders, as we were the first team in the North Island to complete a Cross Laminated Timber building. Designed by the talented Tim Mein Architects, it was a challenging build due to the site size, but a rewarding project as we pieced together this great product to produce a bespoke home. We only wish we got better photos.
